Thoughts from Farmer Anna:
Holy kohlrabi! We are harvesting some seriously large and beautiful kohlrabi bulbs for you this week. I can't believe how much they've grown in a week. They were certainly too small to harvest about 10 days ago and now some of them are monsters. More kohlrabi for you to cook and love this week! If you've never tried this vegetable, it is well-liked by most people, having a flavor between broccoli and turnip. My favorite simple way to prepare it is by cutting it into 1 inch cubes and roasting with a little oil and salt. You'll need to peel the tough skin off before cutting. While many folks discard the kohlrabi leaves, you can definitely cook those down just like kale or collards. Maybe add them to the kale and snap pea skillet recipe near the end of this post. If you want to try something a little more involved (and seriously delicious), kohlrabi is a great fritter vegetable. I found this recipe that uses kohlrabi and a wild Mediterranean herb called meadow parsley (you could sub your italian parsley and some green onion to approximate) that sounds really interesting:
Some very nice beets are back on the menu this week. If you've tried cooking beets and haven't found them to be your favorite veg, maybe give this chocolate beet cake recipe a try. I really didn't know what to do with beets when we received them as baby CSA members ourselves and found this recipe which turned out to be a winner. The large amounts of butter and sugar involved probably help :)

The weather this spring must be just perfect for our brassica crops (kale, broccoli, kohlrabi, cabbage), because they are all looking fantastic and growing to huge sizes. Kale is on again this week and I thought it would pair well sauteed with your sugar snap peas. Don't forget to throw in the kohlrabi leaves and maybe even the spicy salad mix to substitute for the spinach they call for in the recipe.

Looks like more rain is in store for us this week, so we are working to get a bit of bed prep and weeding done tomorrow before it comes. We have plenty of tomato and pepper trellising in the hoophouses to catch up on while the rain falls on Wednesday and Thursday and Friday look very nice for getting more planting done. We are just about finished up with our major spring plantings and will now be just planting succession lettuce crops each week, along with more green beans and carrots until mid to late July when we'll start planting more crops for fall harvest.
Hope you all have a great week!
