Thoughts from Farmer Anna:
I tend to start these newsletters talking about the weather. It's an occupational hazard (and perhaps a right?) as a farmer. Perhaps it gets a bit boring and I sound like a broken record. The truth of it is that I think about the weather constantly throughout the week. We are out in it most of each day and it impacts all of our tasks on the farm. All this to say, I am blissed out by the mild and lovely weather on tap for this week!! It was a glorious day to be outside and we are soaking it up. Also very nice that we got plenty of rain over the weekend, so I can focus energy on getting some weeding done instead of running around switching irrigation every couple of hours. We are living the good life on the farm this week!
Veg-wise, we are just about to turn the corner and start harvesting the first of the early summer vegetables (just in time for summer solstice too!). The summer squash are just starting to come on this week and the cucumbers won't be far behind. I'm seeing the first few cherry tomatoes blushing, so we should start to have a few of those available in a week or two. As farmers, our privilege is getting to eat the first few coming off the vine :) We have some nice looking fennel bulbs in shares this week that pair really nicely with your beets. I know you have been getting a lot of beets in these first shares. Hopefully that is happy for you, but remember if you are getting overloaded that beets store for a month or more in a fridge without their greens. You can also quick pickle roasted beets and they'll be ready to pull out a use in a salad or grain bowl. Here's a fabulous recipe idea for using your beets and fennel in a salad this week:

You are also potentially getting a little overloaded on cabbage. We have another very nice head of napa coming at you this week. I like this post for all of it's great info about Napa cabbage and lots of different salad recipes that incorporate other veggies and unique flavors. Napa is really so versatile!
I almost forgot to mention the picture I have above! We harvested out our first type of garlic last week and it's now in the greenhouse curing. This was a soft neck variety and I'm really impressed with the size of the bulbs. It seemed like we probably should have harvested it about a week earlier as some of the wrappers around the heads were loose and probably won't keep well (they'll be great Farmer food though!).
Have a great week everyone!
