Share 3 - week of June 2nd
In the share this week:
3 kohlrabi bulbs
1 head cabbage
1 bunch swiss chard
1 bunch spring onions
1 bunch green onions
1 head romaine or red butterhead lettuce
1 head little gem lettuce
1 bag sugar snap peas

Thoughts from Farmer Anna:
We are basking in the glorious sunshine, moderate temps and low humidity to start this week. After a good soaking of rain over the last couple of weeks, crops are taking off and really looking lovely. We have lots of new veggies to share with you this week! The pic above is our onion and garlic field. Most of the onions in the foreground are spring planted, so they are not quite sized up yet. The spring onions in your share were planted in late October and overwintered for an early crop. Honestly, they are a little smaller than we've seen in recent years, but that could be due to the lack of rain we had in April. We'll start picking some of the red spring onions this week as well, so you may be getting either yellow or red onions in your share. Along with some awesome green onions!
The lower humidity is a welcome relief to people and plants alike. We did see some damage due to the incessant rain and humidity last week. Radishes are pretty susceptible to cracking and other imperfections and we got very little out of the second bed we had planted. Hopefully our next planting will do a little better as they are sizing up during this nicer week. The sugar snap peas are also not as beautiful as they could be. You may notice some small spots on them. They are still perfectly fine to eat and delicious though!
It is absolutely brassica weather this week. These are crops from the cabbage family, including kohlrabi, kale, broccoli, cauliflower. They really love high temps in the 70-80s and lows in the 50-60s. The cabbage is looking fabulous and we are exciting to already be harvesting these cute heads. This variety is a slightly smaller fresh market head. It will still keep awhile in the fridge (probably 2-3 weeks) and you can easily use half and keep the rest for later. If you've never tried a cabbage and noodle dish, here's a recipe to try. Cabbage is such a versatile veg, being both great for salads and in many cooked applications. This is total comfort food:
Another brassica veg this week is kohlrabi. These are bulbs with their greens attached and you can use both the bulb and green. For most applications, you peel the outer skin off before preparing. Here is some great info about kohlrabi and a tasty recipe idea using them along with sugar snaps and carrots in a salad:
